Methodist Temple understands poverty to be a financial, emotional, and/or spiritual condition, wherein a person lacks the resources to meet their basic needs. Poverty is contrary to God's will for abundant, whole life for all people, but it can be defeated through the power of the Holy Spirit working through human beings.
The goal of the Elijah Fund is to alleviate poverty and to spread hope in the greater Evansville area. In the Old Testament, the prophet Elijah saves the life of a widow and her son, as well as his own life, by multiplying their bread in the name of God (1 Kings 17:7-16). In this same spirit, we offer relief to women and families in crisis, and empower grant recipients with resources for long-term solutions. If you feel called to be a part of this work, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Methodist Temple with "Elijah Fund" in the memo line.
The Elijah Fund can be used to pay for the following: rent, basic utilities, bus tokens, or car repair. If you are in need of food, clothes, or other basics, there is a list of agencies in Evansville that can assist you at the link below. In order to serve the most people, we can only offer grants to each family once every six months. If you wish to apply, come to our church office on Wednesdays between 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. with appropriate documentation of your need.
